Movement
is a privilege.
But we take it for granted.
We live in a world where the necessity to move is becoming increasingly obsolete.
We can get everything delivered to our homes, sometimes the same day.
We work at desks all day, are addicted to screens and can meet with people across the globe while barely moving a muscle.
We’ve had to invent something called “exercise” to make up for the fact that our lives don’t really demand any.
But that still hasn’t stopped the normalisation of sedentary living.
Stiff joints, achey backs in the morning, tight shoulders and hips… these are not inevitable side effects of ageing; they’re inevitable side effects of not moving enough.
It isn’t about getting “beach body ready” or losing a few lbs for an event - it’s about maintaining this body we have for as long as possible.
And it all starts with movement.
Strength
is the only outcome in research that can limit the extent of damage from injury.
Think about that: injuries can - and almost certainly will - happen to all of us at multiple times throughout our lives.
But the only thing that can mitigate the damage any injury may cause, is strength.
Age-related sarcopenia (a gradual atrophy of muscle tissue) kicks in around the turn of our 30s, and the only way to effectively work against this is some form of strength training, utilising the principles of progressive overload and adaptation.
Building and sustaining strength, muscle and mobility are the most important things you can do for your physical longevity, not to mention the mental benefits it can indirectly bring to one’s life.
As a personal trainer, strength coach and FRC mobility specialist, I assess your capacity for both movement and load and start from wherever you are, with whatever you have, gradually building muscle and developing strength and control across every joint’s full range of motion.
Flow
is connection.
To ourselves and the world around us.
Be it riding a wave of energy as we transition between movements; training in the zone, feeling connected to every contraction; rolling with the curve balls life throws rather than reactively resisting challenges or change…
When we’re connected and present, we’re in flow.
When we’re distracted, anxious, stressed or stuck in our heads, it can feel like we’re stumbling in the dark.
Of course, we continually move between these states, and anxiety, stress and “negative” situations are an inevitable part of life.
But we can still work to cultivate more connection and presence where possible, ultimately (and perhaps, most importantly) even learning to flow with the stuff that we don’t like.
“Consciousness is only possible through change; change is only possible through movement”
Aldous Huxley
